HARVEST TIME
After about 92 days from transplanting time and overcoming two typhoons plus a few days of being underwater during the flood in late December of 2014, we finally harvested our first organic SRI demo rice! The crop remained robust and the grains clinging tenaciously to the panicle even during harvest time. The 1,400 sq.m. demo farm yield 8.5 sacks of rice which is about 66 sacks per hectare. Initially this did not seem to be a good figure for us until the farmers compared it with the average harvest of the adjacent farm and the harvest of other nearby farms cultivated the conventional way, which is about 40 to 50 sacks per hectare. Even the other farmers who helped in the cutting, threshing and cleaning the harvest were impressed at the yield and quality of the grains as well as the apparent resistance and overall health of the rice plants, considering the not so very ideal weather conditions of the cropping season.
