Black and white rice (C2 variety) were planted in the 3,000 square meter organic SRI demonstration farm in Timpas last November 29. Unlike in the conventional way of planting, here very tender two-leafed palay plants with grains still on, were picked from the container and gently planted one by one on every marked hill of the drained paddy. This farm size normally needs one bag (50 kilos) of seeds or binhi costing P50 per kilo amounting to P2,500. Here we only used a total of five (5) kilos saving around P2,250 worth of seeds! This means in a one-hectare farm, a farmer can already save around P7,500 on seeds alone using SRI method.
We are also amazed at how the bayanihan spirit is alive and well in Panitan!! Beneficiaries and cluster members of Salocon did not have to join but opted to come over and help the cluster members of Timpas during planting. With everyone's help, the site was fully planted early at around 3 pm.
Beautiful weather, great food, excellent lessons, and a wonderful time for good old rural camaraderie were our greatest take-aways!
